Welcome Message from The Dean Faculty Of- Arts

Welcome and thank you for vising the web portal of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Calabar, We were the first Faculty to be established at the University of Calabar during and after it was weaned from the campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1975. The Faculty, which started with only five academic Departments, has grown with time to ten academic Departments including English and Literary Studies, History and International Studies, Modern Languages and Translation Studies, Linguistics and Nigerian Languages, Fine and Applied Arts, Mass Communication and Digital Media, Music, Religious and Cultural Studies, Theatre, Film and Carnival Studies, and Philosophy.

The pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Emmanuel Ayandele, and his Deputy Vice-Chancellor- Prof. Okon Edet Uya, were both from the Faculty of Arts. The Faculty of Arts has come a long way and has today grown from a four Department Faculty to a ten Department Faculty namely: The Faculty of Arts is studded with eminent and internationally recognized Professors, Associate Professors, Senior Lecturers, from Lecturers one down to Graduate Assistants. They are Faculty members, who were recruited on Merit and who are doing well in their different specialties, our undergraduate students are doing well academically. These staff are supported by seasoned administrative and technical staff.

The Faculty has graduated thousands of both undergraduate and postgraduate students since inception and even at that, employers rating remains commendably high. Our postgraduate studies are also doing well. It is headed by a Faculty Chairman. However, the Faculty has a Graduate Board headed by the Dean. The Departments have their Boards with their Departmental Graduate Chairmen. However, The Board is led by the Head of the Department. Faculty of Arts, University of Calabar is, therefore, a destination point for those seeking academic excellence, in a beautiful environment that is conducive for studies, standard library Facilities that will aid learning, Books, journals, e-books, e-journals, online-data bases, and so on.
