Welcome Message from The Dean Faculty Of- Biological Sciences

Welcome to the web portal of the Faculty of Biological Sciences at the University of Calabar, Nigeria. The Faculty of Biological Sciences was created in 2015 at the 203rd meeting of the University of Calabar Senate following the splitting of the erstwhile Faculty of Science into the Faculties of Biological Sciences and Physical Sciences.

The faculty has five departments- Genetics and Biotechnology, Plant and Ecological Studies (formerly called Botany), Microbiology, Zoology, and Environmental Biology, and Science Laboratory Technology. The Departments of Plant and Ecological Studies, Genetics and Biotechnology, and Zoology and Environmental Biology have full accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2014 while the Department of Microbiology had its full accreditation by NUC in the year 2017. The Department of Science Laboratory Technology has passed the preliminary resource verification stage and is waiting for a full accreditation visit by NUC.

As a faculty, we support free and open intellectual inquiry and diversity of expressions. We sustain excellence in teaching, research, creativity, and innovation. We reward merit and discourage mediocrity. We promote integrity and encourage mentorship among faculty members. We treat our colleagues and students likewise with dignity, respect, and fairness. We promote cross-cultural and cross-national understanding among sister faculties within and outside our university.

These Departments offer courses that lead to the award of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in their various Departments except Science Laboratory Technology that offers only undergraduate programs. These departments are deeply committed to qualitative teaching and actionable research. All the Departments have state-of-the-art equipment in their high-end laboratories. Our research teams are very active with sponsored research in many fields. The various academic programs are powered by a dedicated team of academic, administrative, and technical staff that have been adequately motivated to teach and inspire students to learn. Our expanding Alumni database is dominated by a group of satisfied and accomplished members, who are making huge commitments to the sustenance and development of our academic programs.
