Faculty of Oceanography

Welcome Message from The Dean Faculty Of- Oceanography

Dear visitor: It is our great pleasure and delight to welcome you to the Faculty of Oceanography. We value your interest in our history, vision, mission, programmes, staff and student activities as well as our strides to expand the frontier of knowledge in oceanography and marine sciences in Africa. The University of Calabar is the pioneer and foremost tertiary academic institution in Nigeria and in the West African Sub-Region to run full-fledged Bachelors degree programmes in Marine Sciences. This dates back to 2006 when the first batch of students graduated in Marine Biology, Marine Chemistry, Marine Geology, Physical Oceanography and Fisheries and Aquaculture. From its initial inception in the Institute of Oceanography, the programmes have, at various times, been administered in the then Faculty of Science (now Faculties of Biological and Physical Sciences). In response to the need to consolidate the University’s reputation in ocean science education for training specialised manpower for a wide range of the ocean economic sectors, the Faculty of Oceanography was established during the 2015/2016 session. In a bid to sustain its leading role as a centre of excellence, the Faculty has since inception developed a new bench mark for marine science undergraduate training in Nigeria as well as completed the curriculum on post-graduate programmes up to doctoral level in Biological, Chemical, Geological and Physical Oceanography in addition to Fisheries and Aquaculture. The commencement of these programmes is slated for 2018/2019 session, given the human and material resources available in our Faculty, the Institute as well as the Faculties of Biological and Physical Sciences. As a young Faculty, we are proud to have the first Oceanographer in the world to be elected a fellow of the African Academy of Science in 2017. We are also honoured to have a 2017 Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science as well as our Faculty member nominated in 2018 as one of the three thematic coordinators of the Africa Science Plan developed by the International Council for Science Regional Office for Africa. The outlook of the Faculty of Oceanography towards actualising its vision and fulfilling its mission is bright but invariably calls for increased networking with the global ocean science community and partnerships with local maritime industries and institutions. The procedure required to realise these goals is what defines our future direction. Welcome to the world of Marine of Science. Prof. Albert P. Ekanem Dean
